Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed through small incisions using a thin tube called a laparoscope, which is equipped with a camera and light source. The camera provides a clear view of the internal organs, allowing surgeons to perform precise procedures without making large cuts. This technique is commonly used for gynecological, abdominal, and gastrointestinal conditions.
Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery typically results in less pain, smaller scars, reduced blood loss, and a faster recovery period. Patients often experience shorter hospital stays and can return to their normal activities more quickly. Depending on the condition being treated, laparoscopic surgery may be used for diagnostic purposes, removal of tumors, treatment of endometriosis, hysterectomy, or other surgical procedures.
Additional small incisions are made to insert specialized surgical instruments. The surgeon performs the required procedure while viewing real-time images on a monitor.
Once the surgical procedure is completed, the laparoscope and other surgical instruments are carefully removed from the abdomen. The small incisions are then closed using sutures, surgical tape, or adhesive strips, and dressings are applied to protect the wound and promote healing.
After surgery, the patient is monitored in a recovery area until the effects of anesthesia wear off. Most patients experience less pain and a quicker recovery compared to open surgery, allowing them to return home within a short period and resume normal activities sooner under their doctor’s guidance.
